1199SEIU was founded 75 years ago by pharmacists – and since then, tens of thousands of professionals have joined 1199, including most recently, our co-workers at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Carney Hospital.
As healthcare professionals on the front lines, we need an effective voice to advocate for quality care. Our work is often the first step in helping doctors and healthcare delivery teams provide the highest quality of care for our patients – and advancing our professions is vital to the success of our hospital and to the healthcare system.
Our professional members at other Caritas Christi facilities, Good Samaritan, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Centers and Carney Hospital include:
- Vascular Technologists
- Cardiac Technologists
- Histotechnicians
- Ultrasound Technologists
- Pharmacy Technicians
- Ultrasound Techs
- EEG Techs
- LPNs
- Coders
- Mammo Techs
- Respiratory Therapists
- Radiation Therapists
- X-ray Techs
- Medical Lab Techs
And in Massachusetts alone, our thousands of professional and technical workers also include:
- Coders
- Social Workers
- Medical Technologists
- Dietitians
- Nuclear Medicine Techs
- Occupational Therapists
- Pharmacists
- Physical Therapists
- Speech Therapists
No one can make any promises about what we’ll win when we negotiate a contract at St Elizabeth’s, except these: we are stronger together, and when we vote to unionize, management by law must negotiate with us as a union.
Professional members also create their own “Professional Councils” to address issues such as:
- Determining priorities in establishing no-cost continuing education opportunities to help us meet our licensing requirements and enhance our skills.
- Building close relationships with national professional associations to achieve shared goals.
- Developing hospital specific professional practice committees to address issues of concern to individual professions work environments.
“Uniting in 1199SEIU gives healthcare professionals the powerful voice we need to protect hospital funding on Beacon Hill. With thousands of professional voices united together, we can make a real difference in the priorities set by our political leaders."
And we get results – advocating for healthcare access for the uninsured, securing funding for our landmark training and upgrading program, and mobilizing thousands of 1199SEIU members to rally against drastic cuts to healthcare appropriations.
